The Top 50 CEOs in Finance and Investing of 2022

Top CFOs is pleased to announce the Top 50 CEOs in Finance and Investing of 2022. These accomplished executives head some of the world’s largest and most influential banks, investment firms, and asset management companies. They have led their organizations through decades of economic turbulence to reach new heights and to offer millions of institutional and individual clients the best financial products and services.

Leadership in the financial industry is defined by the impact one has on global, national, and local economies. This year’s awardees were closely evaluated and selected based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, integrity, organizational stewardship, financial innovation, industry advancement, and socioeconomic influence. We congratulate the Top 50 CEOs in Finance and Investing of 2022 and the organizations they lead.

 

1. Larry Fink, BlackRock
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Larry Fink, BlackRock’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, was one of eight partners who founded the firm in 1988. BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager, with $10 trillion in assets under management, 70 offices in 30 countries, and clients in 100 countries. Fink has been named one of the World’s Greatest Leaders by Fortune magazine and one of the World’s Best CEOs by Barron’s.

 

2. Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Jamie Dimon has been JPMorgan Chase’s Chief Executive Officer since 2005 and Chairman of the Board since 2006. The company is the world’s largest bank by market capitalization and the fifth-largest bank in terms of total assets under management, with $3.8 trillion. It services clients in more than 100 countries. Dimon formerly held the roles of President and Chief Operating Officer.

 

3. Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Warren Buffett has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Berkshire Hathaway since 1970. Berkshire Hathaway reported earnings of $90 billion in 2021 and was ranked sixth on the Fortune 500 list of largest U.S. corporations by total revenue that year. Buffett is currently the world’s sixth-wealthiest person with a net worth of more than $117 billion.

 

4. Stephen Schwarzman, Blackstone
Title: Co-founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer

Stephen Schwarzman has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone since he co-founded it in 1985. Blackstone is one of the world’s leading investment firms and as of December 31, 2021 has $881 billion in assets under management. In 2019, Schwarzman published his first book, the New York Times Best Seller “What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence,” which draws from his experiences in business, philanthropy, and public service. In 2020, Schwarzman signed The Giving Pledge, pledging to contribute a majority of his considerable wealth to philanthropic causes.

 

5. Brian Moynihan, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Brian Moynihan has been Chief Executive Officer and Chairman at Bank of America Merrill Lynch since 2010. Bank of America, with more than 200,000 employees, is the second-largest banking institution in the United States and the eighth-largest bank in the world. Moynihan, Chief Executive Magazine’s CEO of the Year in 2020, joined Fleet Boston Bank in 1993 and held several positions there until FleetBoston Financial merged with Bank of America.

 

6. Jane Fraser, Citigroup
Title: Chief Executive Officer

In 2021, Citigroup named Jane Fraser Chief Executive Officer, making her the first woman to ever head a major U.S. bank. Citigroup, the third-largest banking institution in the United States, has more than 200,000 employees and services more than 200 million customer accounts in more than 160 countries. Fraser previously held several senior leaderships positions at Citigroup after serving as a Partner at McKinsey & Company.

 

7. Abby Johnson, Fidelity Investments
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Abby Johnson has served as Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Investments since 2014 and was appointed Chairman in 2016. Fidelity has 23 million investors and manages employee benefits for 20,000 businesses, with $4.2 trillion in managed assets. Johnson’s grandfather founded the mutual fund giant in 1946.

 

8. John S. Weinberg, Evercore
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

John S. Weinberg is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Evercore. He was named Co-Chairman of the Board and Co-Chief Executive Officer in 2020. Evercore services clients from 28 offices in 11 countries across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia and has nearly 2,000 employees globally. Prior to joining Evercore, Weinberg served as Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs, which he joined in 1983 as an Associate.

 

9. David Solomon, Goldman Sachs
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

David Solomon is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs, a position he has held since 2018. Goldman Sachs is the second-largest investment bank in the world by revenue, with offices in all major financial centers. Solomon was previously President and Chief Operating Officer. He joined the firm in 1999 as a Partner.

 

10. Penny Pennington, Edward Jones
Title: Managing Partner

In 2019, Penny Pennington became the first woman to head a leading American brokerage, becoming just the sixth Managing Partner in the firm’s 100-year history. Edward Jones has nearly seven million clients served by 19,000 financial advisors in the United States and Canada. Pennington began her career with Edward Jones in 2000, becoming a Partner in 2006 and holding various leadership roles.

 

11. Emmanuel Roman, PIMCO
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Emmanuel Roman was named PIMCO's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in 2016. PIMCO is one of the world’s largest investment managers, actively managing more than $2.2 trillion in assets. It has more than 2,900 employees working in 17 offices throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Roman was formerly Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer at Man Group.

 

12. Ken Jacobs, Lazard
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Ken Jacobs has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lazard since 2009. Lazard operates in more than 40 cities across 25 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Central and South America. Jacobs was formerly Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of Lazard, having joined the firm in 1988.

 

13. Cyrus Taraporevala, State Street Global Advisors
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

Cyrus Taraporevala joined State Street Global Advisors in 2016 as Head of the Global Institutional Group, later becoming President and Chief Executive Officer. State Street is one of the largest asset management companies in the world, with $3.9 trillion under management and $43.3 trillion under custody and administration. Prior to joining State Street, Taraporevala was with Fidelity Investments, BNY Mellon, Legg Mason, Citicorp, and McKinsey & Company.

 

14. James Gorman, Morgan Stanley
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

James Gorman became Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Stanley in 2010 and Chairman in 2012. Morgan Stanley has more than 70,000 employees across 41 countries. Gorman is a former Co-President of the company and previously held executive positions at Merrill Lynch. He began his career at McKinsey & Company.

 

15. C.S. Venkatakrishnan, Barclays
Title: Group Chief Executive

C.S. Venkatakrishnan was named Group Chief Executive in 2021, after serving as Head of Global Markets and Co-President of Barclays Bank PLC. With more than 325 years of history and expertise in banking, Barclays operates in more than 40 countries and employs approximately 83,500 people. Venkatakrishnan previously held senior leadership roles at JPMorgan Chase.

 

16. Jennifer Johnson, Franklin Templeton Investments
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

Jennifer Johnson became President and Chief Executive Officer of Franklin Templeton Investments in 2020. The firm has clients in more than 160 countries and is one of the world’s largest asset managers, with $1.5 trillion in assets under management. Johnson joined the firm in 1988 and previously served as Chief Operating Officer.

 

17. Richard Fairbank, Capital One
Title: Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer

Richard Fairbank has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Capital One since the company’s IPO in 1994. Capital One has more than 750 branches and this year was ranked seventh on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Banks. Previously, Fairbank was Vice President and Head of the Banking Practice at Strategic Planning Assets, a national strategy consulting firm.

 

18. George Walker, Neuberger Berman
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

George Walker has been the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Neuberger Berman since 2008. Neuberger Berman has been named the #1 Best Place to Work in asset management among firms with more than 1,000 employees. Walker was Global Head of the Investment Management Division at Neuberger Berman’s former corporate parent, Lehman Brothers. Previously, he was a Partner at Goldman Sachs.

 

19. William Demchak, PNC Financial Services
Title: Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

William Demchak was named PNC Financial Services Group’s President in 2012 and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 2014. PNC Bank operates in 27 states and the District of Columbia, with more than 2,600 branches, making it one of the largest U.S. banks by number of branches. Demchak was previously Senior Vice Chairman with PNC, after serving as the Global Head of Structured Finance and Credit Portfolio at JPMorgan Chase.

 

20. Walter W. Bettinger II, Charles Schwab
Title: Director and Chief Executive Officer

Walter W. Bettinger II has been Charles Schwab’s Chief Executive Officer since 2008. He leads a workforce of approximately 33,000 employees in 420 locations serving 33.3 million client brokerage accounts, 1.6 million bank accounts, and 2.2 million retirement plan participants. At age 22, Bettinger founded The Hampton Company, a provider of retirement plan services, which Charles Schwab acquired in 1995.

 

21. Thomas Gibbons, Bank of New York Mellon Corp.
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Thomas Gibbons was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Bank of New York Mellon in 2020 after serving as interim CEO for one year. BNY Mellon, one of Fortune magazine’s most admired companies in the world, is the world’s largest custodian bank and securities services company, with $2.4 trillion in assets under management. Gibbons was previously Chief Financial Officer of BNY Mellon and Chief Risk Officer and Chief Financial officer of The Bank of New York Company. He has also served as a Director of the PHH Corporation.

 

22. Ronald Kruszewski, Stifel Financial
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Ron Kruszewski joined Stifel Financial as Chief Executive Officer in 1997 and was named Chairman of the Board in 2001. Stifel is the seventh-largest brokerage firm in the United States, with 2,300 financial advisors and more than 390 locations. Kruszewski began his career as a Certified Public Account with KPMG, later becoming Chief Financial Officer for Robert W. Baird & Company.

 

23. Timothy H. Wennes, Santander
Title: Chief Executive Officer and Country Head, Santander Holdings US; President and Chief Executive Officer, Santander Bank, N.A.

Since 2019, Timothy H. Wennes has held the positions of Chief Executive Officer and Country Head at Santander Holdings US and President and Chief Executive Officer at Santander Bank, N.A. Santander has about 191,000 employees, more than a trillion euros in total funds, and 148 million customers across 11,000 branches. Wennes previously worked at Country Bank, MUFG Holdings Corp., and Union Bank N.A.

 

24. Shemara Wikramanayake, Macquarie Group
Title: Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer

Shemara Wikramanayake is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Macquarie group, a role she assumed in December 2018. Macquarie employs more than 17,000 staff in 33 markets and is the world’s largest infrastructure advisor. Wikramanayake joined Macquarie Group in 1987 and previously headed Macquarie Asset Management.

 

25. Paul Reilly, Raymond James
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Paul Reilly became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Raymond James Financial in May 2010. Raymond James has approximately 8,400 financial advisors throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas, with total client assets of $1.2 trillion. Reilly was previously Executive Chairman of Korn/Ferry International and CEO of KPMG International.

 

26. Seth P. Bernstein, AllianceBernstein
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

President and Chief Executive Officer Seth P. Bernstein was appointed to his post at asset management firm AllianceBernstein in 2017. The $779 billion firm offers high-quality research and diversified investment services in world markets. Bernstein previously had a distinguished 32-year career at JPMorgan Chase. Bernstein is based at the company’s new headquarters in Nashville.

 

27. Michael O’Grady, Northern Trust
Title: Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Michael O'Grady is Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Northern Trust. The firm has nearly 20,000 employees across 22 states and Washington D.C. and has 23 locations in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region. O’Grady joined Northern Trust in 2011 from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, after previously working for Price Waterhouse.

 

28. David McKay, RBC
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

David McKay was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of RBC in 2014. RBC is Canada’s largest bank and one of the largest in the world based on market capitalization, with more than 88,000 employees serving 17 million clients in Canada, the United States, and 27 other countries. McKay joined RBC as a co-op student in computer programming in 1983.

 

29. Timothy D. Armour, Capital Group
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Timothy D. Armour has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Group since 2015. Capital Group manages more than $2 trillion in assets, including more than $800 million in institutional retirement assets. Armour has 38 years of investment experience, all with Capital Group.

 

30. Thomas Gottstein, Credit Suisse
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Thomas Gottstein was named Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse in 2020. The leading global wealth manager has businesses in more than 50 countries worldwide and more than 45,000 employees from 150 different nations. Gottstein began his career at UBS and joined Credit Suisse in 1999, later holding several leadership positions.

 

31. Ralph Hamers, UBS
Title: Group Chief Executive Officer

UBS’s Group Chief Executive Officer Ralph Hamers was appointed to his position in 2020. UBS has more than 71,000 employees globally in 50 countries. He previously served as CEO of ING Group, and before that he was CEO of ING Belgium and ING Nederland, among other leadership positions with the company.

 

32. Onur Genç, BBVA
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Onur Genç was named Chief Executive Officer of BBVA in 2018, after serving as CEO of BBVA Compass and Country Manager USA. Founded in Bilbao, Spain in 1857, BBVA has more than 110,000 employees and 81.7 million customers. Genç previously held senior leadership positions at Garanti and McKinsey & Company.

 

33. Noel Quinn, HSBC
Title: Group Chief Executive

Noel Quinn was appointed Group Chief Executive of HSBC in 2020. HSBC serves more than 40 million customers with a network covering 64 countries and territories. Quinn was previously interim Group Chief Executive and has been with HSBC or its constituent companies since 1987.

 

34. Frédéric Oudéa, Société Générale
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Frédéric Oudéa was named Chief Executive Officer of Société Générale in 2008. Société Générale has a staff of more than 138,000 in 62 countries, servicing 29 million clients. Oudéa joined Société Générale in 1995 after serving in the economic sector of the French civil service.

 

35. Andy Cecere, U.S. Bancorp
Title: Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Andy Cecere became President of U.S. Bancorp in 2016, Chief Executive Officer in 2017, and Chairman in 2018. U.S. Bancorp is the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States, with more than 70,000 employees and $554 billion in assets under management as of December 2020. Cecere began his career as a Financial Analyst before joining U.S. Bancorp in 1985.

 

36. Steven van Rijswijk, ING Group
Title: Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board

Steven van Rijswijk is ING Group’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board. ING has more than 57,000 employees serving 38 million customers in more than 40 countries. Prior to his appointment in 2020, van Rijswijk was Chief Risk Officer. He has held several other positions within ING dating back to 1995.

 

37. Kentaro Okuda, Nomura
Title: President and Group Chief Executive Officer

Nomura’s Kentaro Okuda became President and Group Chief Executive Officer in 2020. Nomura has more than 26,000 employees in more than 30 countries and has the largest retail network in Japan. Okuda was formerly Deputy President and Group Co-Chief Operating Officer. He joined the company in 1987.

 

38. Victor Dodig, CIBC
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

Victor Dodig has been President and Chief Executive Officer of CIBC since 2014. CIBC is a leading North American financial institution with 11 million personal banking, business, public sector, and institutional clients and more than 1,100 locations. Dodig previously held senior leadership positions at CIBC, as well as at UBS and Merrill Lynch, and was a Management Consultant with McKinsey & Company.

 

39. Bharat Masrani, TD Bank
Title: Group President and Chief Executive Officer

Bharat Masrani was appointed Group President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Bank Group in 2014. TD is the sixth-largest bank in North America by number of branches and services approximately 22 million customers with 85,000 employees worldwide. Masrani began his career with TD as a Commercial Banking Trainee in 1987, later holding a succession of senior executive roles across the bank’s global footprint.

 

40. Tim Buckley, Vanguard Group 
Title: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Tim Buckley has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Group since 2017. Vanguard Group is the world’s largest provider of mutual funds, the second-largest provider of exchanged-traded funds, and has $7 trillion in global assets under management. Buckley joined Vanguard in 1991 and rose through the ranks to a number of senior leadership positions before being unanimously elected CEO.

 

41. William Rogers Jr., Truist Financial Corporation
Title: Chief Executive Officer

William Rogers Jr. was named Chief Executive Officer of Truist in 2022, after previously serving as President and Chief Operating Officer. Truist is the tenth-largest bank in the United States, with $509 billion in assets and 2,800 branches in 15 states and Washington D.C. Rogers was previously Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SunTrust Bank, which he joined in 1980.

 

42. William Truscott, Columbia Threadneedle Investments
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Columbia Threadneedle Investment’s William “Ted” Truscott has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2001. The company, which employs more than 2,000 people, manages $583 billion in assets in North America, Europe, and Asia. Truscott formerly held leadership positions with Zurich Scudder Investments, which he joined as a Portfolio Manager in 1992.

 

43. Rich Handler, Jefferies Group
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Rich Handler has been Chief Executive Officer of Jefferies Group since 2001; he is one of the longest-serving CEOs on Wall Street. The firm has offices in more than 30 cities in the Americas, Europe, and Asia and is the seventh-largest investment bank in the world by revenue. Handler joined Jefferies in 1990 as a salesman and trader.

 

44. Dan Barclay, BMO Capital Markets
Title: Chief Executive Officer and Group Head

Dan Barclay was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Group Head of BMO Capital Markets in 2018. BMO Capital Markets is the eighth-largest bank, by assets, in North America, with more than 12 million customers worldwide. Previously, he served as Co-Head of the firm's Global Investment & Corporate Banking, Principal at Morgan Stanley, and Managing Director at Scotiabank.

 

45. Philipp Rickenbacher, Julius Baer
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Philipp Rickenbacher has been Chief Executive Officer of Julius Baer since 2006. The 130-year-old firm has a presence in more than 60 locations worldwide, assets under management of $523 billion, and a staff of more than 6,600. Rickenbacher joined Julius Baer in 2004. Previously, he served as an Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company.

 

46. Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, BNP Paribas
Title: Director and Chief Executive Officer

Jean-Laurent Bonnafé has served as Chief Executive Officer of BNP Paribas since 2011. BNP is a leading European bank with a presence in 74 countries and more than 192,000 employees. He joined BNP as a senior investment banker in 1994 and later led the post-merger and integration organization for BNP Paribas, as well as holding other senior leadership positions.

 

47. Christian Sewing, Deutsche Bank
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Christian Sewing has been Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank since 2018. Deutsche Bank is the 21st-largest bank in the world by total assets and operates in 58 countries. Sewing joined Deutsche Bank in 1989 and has served in the company’s offices in Frankfurt, London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Toronto.

 

48. Masahiro Kihara, Mizuho
Title: President and Group Chief Executive Officer

Masahiro Kihara is President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Mizuho, the third-largest financial services group in Japan and the 15th-largest banking institution in the world, with assets in excess of $1.8 trillion. Kihara, who was named to the positions earlier this year, joined the bank in 1989, previously serving as Executive Officer of Mizuho Securities and General Manager of the Risk Management Department.

 

49. Robert Swaak, ABN AMRO
Title: Chief Executive Officer

Robert Swaak was named Chief Executive Officer of Dutch bank ABN AMRO in 2020. The third-largest bank in the Netherlands, ABN AMRO has five million personal and corporate banking customers in 63 countries worldwide and more than 20,000 employees. Swaak joined the bank after serving as Global Relationship Partner for PwC and Chairman of the Board of Management for PwC Nederland.

 

50. Charles Scharf, Wells Fargo & Company
Title: President and Chief Executive Officer

Charles W. “Charlie” Scharf was named Wells Fargo & Company’s Chief Executive Officer and President in 2017. Wells Fargo has offices in 38 countries and territories and approximately 265,000 employees. Scharf was formerly Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of New York Mellon and Chief Executive Officer of Visa Inc.
