Finance and Investing is pleased to announce The Top 25 CFOs of Maryland for 2023. As one of the original thirteen colonies, Maryland is known for its rich history, iconic blue crabs, and being home to the U.S. Naval Academy and prestigious institutions like Johns Hopkins University. Additionally, the Old Line State is an attractive place for many of today's top business leaders. This is evidenced by it being home to GEICO and Under Armour, as well as many other leading organizations. Ensuring that these businesses are properly managing finances and following sound financial strategies, CFOs play a crucial role in the state's booming economy. As such, the recipients of this year's awards have demonstrated exceptional expertise in their respective fields, offering personalized and institutional financial advice that empowers their clients to achieve success at all levels.

This year's list of distinguished honorees includes Joseph Corbett, who has served as the CFO for the US Postal Service since 2009. Leveraging over 35 years of experience in finance and accounting, Corbett heads USPS's Finance and Strategy, Treasury, Accounting, Pricing and Costing, and Supply Management functions. Also honored is Susan Krabbe, who serves as CFO at Columbia Association, a nonprofit that is home to approximately 100,000 people and several thousand businesses. Under Krabbe's leadership, CA has achieved its strongest financial results ever. Meanwhile, David Bergman has been with the sports apparel giant Under Armour for nearly two decades. In his current CFO role, Bergman is responsible for accounting, finance, internal audit and insurance, investor relations, and tax and treasury functions for one of the most recognizable clothing brands on the globe.

1. Joseph Corbett
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, US Postal Service

Joseph Corbett was named Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President for the US Postal Service in February 2009. Reporting to the Postmaster General and CEO, Corbett heads the organization’s Finance and Strategy, Treasury, Accounting, Pricing and Costing and Supply Management functions. A member of the Executive Leadership Team, Corbett also serves as the chairman of the Investment Review Committee.

Corbett has over 35 years of finance, treasury and accounting experience. He began his career working with “Big Four” accounting firm KPMG, where he served for more than a decade. He also spent more than 10 years in senior management roles at three-multibillion-dollar commercial companies. This includes serving as controller, chief accounting officer, executive vice president and CFO at Intelsat, Ltd; chief accounting officer and CFO at BearingPoint, Inc.; and chief of internal audit at NVR, Inc. During his time with these companies, Corbett led multiple efforts related to all aspects of accounting, financial planning and reporting and treasury transactions.

Corbett graduated with honors from George Washington University, where he received a bachelor’s in business administration. Later he was admitted to the GWU Athletic Hall of Fame. Previously, Corbett chaired Sarbanes-Oxley and Retirement Plan committees. Currently, he is a member of the Phoenix Bikes and GWU advisory boards. On top of that, Corbett is a Lean Six Sigma certified Green Belt.

 

2. Mitchell Lomax
Chief Financial Officer, Ascension Saint Agnes

Mitchell Lomax is the Chief Financial Officer of Ascension Saint Agnes, which is part of Ascension, a faith-based healthcare organization dedicated to transformation through innovation across the continuum of care. As one of the leading non-profit and Catholic health systems in the U.S., Ascension is committed to delivering compassionate, personalized care to all, with special attention to persons living in poverty and those most vulnerable. Located in Baltimore,
Ascension Saint Agnes is a 251-bed, full-service teaching hospital with residency programs in a number of medical and surgical specialties. Lomax first joined the organization in 2020.

Previously, Lomax was a senior director of clinical economics at St. Agnes Hospital. Before that, he served as a manager of reimbursement at The University of Maryland Medical System. Earlier in his career, he worked with Washington Hospital Center as a senior manager of reimbursement. Lomax earned an MBA in finance from Loyola University Maryland.

 

3. Jay Malave
Chief Financial Officer, Lockheed Martin

Jesus “Jay” Malave is the Chief Financial Officer for the Lockheed Martin Corporation. In this role, Malave is responsible for all aspects of the corporation’s financial strategies, processes, and operations. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, Malave served as senior vice president and CFO for L3Harris Technologies. In this role, he was responsible for oversight of all internal and external financial reporting, and the development of the corporation’s strategic plan and the evaluation, execution and integration of mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining L3Harris in June 2019, Malave served as vice president and CFO for Carrier Corporation, an operating unit of United Technologies Corporation.

Notably, he joined UTC’s Corporate Office in 1997 and held roles of increasing responsibility. In 2011, Malave led the finance functional integration of Hamilton Sundstrand and UTC’s Goodrich acquisition. In 2012, he was appointed head of investor relations for the corporation, where he spent two years working with UTC’s business units to effectively communicate the company’s outlook and performance to investors. Malave was then appointed CFO of UTC Aerospace Systems, where he served until joining Carrier Corporation in 2018.

Malave earned a bachelor’s in mathematics from the University of Connecticut, a master’s in accounting from the University of Hartford, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law.

 

4. Andrew Brynes
Chief Financial Officer, Elevance Health

Andrew Brynes joined Elevance Health in 2020, bringing 25 years of broad strategic, financial, and operational leadership experience in healthcare and related industries. In his current CFO role, he is responsible for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all financial activities – ensuring they meet and exceed financial commitments based on sound financial strategy and long-term planning

Prior to joining Elevance Health, Brynes spent five years with the NYC-based investment firm, Loeb Enterprises, where he served as the CFO to several portfolio companies. He was responsible for financial reporting, strategic planning, corporate development, business analysis, capital raising, and broad financial management. Prior to this role, he was the Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. In this position, he was responsible for enterprise strategy and building a portfolio of healthcare services and technology companies to drive profitable growth.

Brynes earned his BS in business administration from the University of Rhode Island and his MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

 

5. Tyler Nye
Chief Financial Officer, Stanley Black & Decker

Tyler Nye is the Chief Financial Officer of Stanley Black & Decker, a provider of industrial equipment. The company manufactures and sells hand tools, power tools, and many other related accessories. Stanley markets its offerings under the Black & Decker, Facom, Craftsman, Lenox, Irwin, Bostitch, DeWALT, Porter-Cable, GQ, FLEXVOLT and Stanley brands.

Nye has 14 years of experience. He began his career in 2009. Before joining Stanley Black & Decker, he served as a senior financial analyst at Johnson & Johnson Consumer. Before that, he was a senior financial analyst at Janssen, Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. Nye graduated from Penn State University with an undergraduate degree in finance.

 

6. Eric Tamura
Chief Financial Officer, Sysco

Eric Tamura began his professional career nearly three decades ago. Today, he is the Chief Financial Officer of Sysco, a global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers who prepare meals away from home. Its family of products also includes equipment and supplies for the foodservice and hospitality industries. With more than 71,000 colleagues, the company operates 333 distribution facilities worldwide and serves more than 700,000 customer locations.

Tamura first got his start in 1995 as an accountant at Hospital Services Laboratory. From there, he went on to Ingram Micro, before eventually rising to general manager at The Phoenix Group, his most recent position prior to joining Sysco. Tamura graduated from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School with an MBA. He also graduated from California State University, Fullerton with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

 

7. James Daniker
Chief Financial Officer, Johns Hopkins Medicine

James Daniker is the Chief Financial Officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine, which is a governing structure for the University’s School of Medicine and the health system – coordinating their research, teaching, patient care, and related enterprises. With a rich history, the Johns Hopkins Hospital opened in 1889, followed four years later by the university’s School of Medicine. The hospital is now part of the Johns Hopkins Health System, which includes two other acute-care hospitals and additional integrated health-care delivery components. Today JHHS provides a network of primary and specialty care practices throughout Maryland. This includes outpatient care, long-term care, and home care.

Daniker first joined the company in 2009 as a senior financial analyst. He earned an MBA from Loyola University Maryland, and an undergraduate degree in public health from The Johns Hopkins University.

 

8. Sean McGraw
Chief Financial Officer, TEKsystems

Sean McGraw is the Chief Financial Officer of TEKsystems, a leading global provider of IT staffing and services. With over 35 years of experience, TEKsystems connects top-tier IT professionals with companies seeking to leverage technology for business growth. The company offers a wide range of solutions, including contract staffing, direct placement, and managed services. Headquartered in Hanover, Maryland, TEKsystems' extensive network spans across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, allowing them to serve clients in various industries.

McGraw has 14 years of experience. He began his career in 2009. He graduated from Towson University with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

 

9. Scott Sekella
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Jo-Ann Stores

Scott Sekella joined Jo-Ann Stores as SVP, Chief Financial Officer in September 2022. He was later promoted to Executive Vice President in April 2023. In his current role, he oversees all aspects of finance and accounting, as well as indirect procurement.

Sekella brings more than twenty years of experience in finance for a number of national brands. Mostly recently, he served as Vice President, Corporate FP&A at Under Armour. He joined the apparel giant in 2016 as Senior Director, FP&A. Prior to Under Armour, Sekella held roles of increasing responsibility at Crocs, where he ultimately served as VP and Global Controller. Previously, he held roles overseeing several aspects of Finance at Henkel of America, Pfizer and Ford Motor Company. Sekella graduated summa cum laude from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business. He also holds an MBA from the University of Michigan.

 

10. Brenda Galgano
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Perdue Farms

Brenda Galgano is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Perdue Farms. She joined Perdue in 2018. In her current role, Galgano is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the company. This includes financial planning and analysis, accounting and financial reporting – as well as managing tax, internal audit, treasury, risk management and information technology.

Notably, Galgano is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 20 years of diverse business experience. She recently served as a member of the Rutgers University Business School Finance Advisory Board. She holds a bachelor of science in business administration in accounting from Bryant University.

 

11. Stacey Jenkins
Chief Financial Officer, Aerotek

As Chief Financial Officer of Aerotek, Stacey Jenkins oversees financial performance and helps set strategic direction for the company. Her goal is to advance the innovative and agile solutions Aerotek offers to clients and contractors, allowing both to achieve their goals and objectives.

A versatile leader, Jenkins has more than 20 years of diverse industry experience. In 1998, she started at Aerotek’s sister company. Since then, she has worked in various operational and financial leadership roles, including 10 years overseeing financial performance and strategy for Aerotek’s largest customers. In her most recent position as Vice President of Strategic Delivery, Jenkins led Aerotek’s centralized delivery operations and developed new solutions to help customers meet complex human capital challenges.

Passionate about developing others, Jenkins serves on the executive board of Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, an organization that prepares young people who want to achieve economic success. She has also mentored numerous emerging leaders at Aerotek. Previously, the Staffing Industry Association has twice recognized Jenkins on its Global Power 150 — Women in Staffing list. Jenkins graduated from the University of Maryland.

 

12. Jonathan Gallo
Chief Financial Officer, D.R. Horton

Jonathan Gallo began his professional career 22 years ago. Today he serves as the Chief Financial Officer of D.R. Horton, a homebuilding company that engages in the acquisition and development of land – and construction and sale of residential homes – in 106 markets across 33 states. Under the names of D.R. Horton, America's Builder, Express Homes, Emerald Homes, and Freedom Homes, the company constructs and sells single-family detached homes; and attached homes, such as townhomes, duplexes, and triplexes. It also provides mortgage financing services; and title insurance policies, and examination and closing services, as well as engages in the residential lot development business.

Gallo first got his start in 2001 as a finance manager at UPS Supply Chain Solutions. From there, he went on to K. Hovnanian Homes, before eventually rising to division manager at Caruso Homes, his most recent position prior to joining D.R. Horton. Gallo graduated from Goldey-Beacom College with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

 

13. David Bergman
Chief Financial Officer, Under Armour

Sports apparel giant Under Armour appointed David Bergman as its Chief Financial Officer in December 2017. Reporting directly to the company’s CEO, Bergman is responsible for accounting, finance, internal audit and insurance, investor relations, tax and treasury. It is also worthy to note that Bergman has been with the company for nearly two decades, having joined Under Armour in 2004. Since then, he has held several senior management roles within the company's finance and accounting organization. This includes Corporate Controller and most recently Senior Vice President of Corporate Finance.

Bergman began his career as a CPA at Arthur Andersen, serving both large public and smaller private clients in the consumer products and healthcare industries. He then served in senior audit and consulting roles at Ernst & Young. Bergman graduated from James Madison University with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

 

14. James Moylan
Chief Financial Officer, Ciena

For more than a dozen years, James E. Moylan Jr. has served as Chief Financial Officer at Cyan, a global leader in optical and routing systems, services, and automation software. Founded in 1992 under the name HydraLite, the Hanover, Maryland-based company has been described by The Baltimore Sun as the "world's biggest player in optical connectivity.”

Notably, Moylan has spent much of his career in the energy industry. Before joining Ciena in 2007, he served as CFO for Swett & Crawford and PRG-Schultz International. He also held key roles at Georgia-Pacific Corp., SCI Systems, Inc., and Sonat, Inc. Moyland holds a degree in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University.

 

15. Yaser Ali
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Vision Technology

Yaser Ali joined Vision Technology in 2022. As the Chief Financial Officer, he oversees a staff that provide broad-ranging internal services, including accounting, finance, M&A, treasury, credit/collections and payroll. In his role, Ali supports company strategic-wide initiatives in driving revenue, process improvements, and growth.

Ali is an established Finance and Operations professional with over 18 years of experience.
Prior to joining Vision, he held numerous leadership positions in finance and operations, overseeing multi-billion dollar divisions and organizations within Amazon, SunEdison, and Terraform Power. Additionally, he has taken two companies successfully public. Ali holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from University of Maryland and a six sigma green belt certification.

 

16. Matthew Sticklin
Chief Financial Officer, Maxim Healthcare Services

Maxim Healthcare Services appointed Matthew Sticklin as the company’s chief financial officer in October 2022. Sticklin has been with Maxim for two decades, serving in various influential roles and providing financial leadership during periods of growth and continued expansion. He first joined the company in 2003 as a reimbursement specialist and went on to be controller and senior vice president of finance. In his current CFO role, Sticklin leads Maxim’s financial operations and monitors financial plans and budgets.

“I have personally worked alongside Matt for years and, knowing his impressive career history, I could not be more confident in the aptitude, servant leadership and dedication he will bring to this position,” said Jarrod DePriest, president of Maxim Healthcare Services.

Sticklin previously served as chief financial officer for Major, Lindsey & Africa (MLA) and Allegis Partners, part of the Allegis Group organization. In this role, he oversaw financial operations, partnered with leadership to create goals and strategy, and helped the company achieve record gross profit and net income. Sticklin earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and natural sciences from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania.

 

17. Dave Miller
Chief Financial Officer, Sonatype

As CFO of Sonatype, Dave Miller is chartered with managing corporate financial activities. Miller brings over 30 years of accounting, financial and strategic planning experience, including over ten years as Sonatype’s CFO, where his efforts helped lead the company from an early start up to a significant growth acquisition by Vista Equity Partners in late 2019.

Prior to joining Sonatype, Miller was CFO of USinternetworking, a leading application service provider, where he led the company’s financial efforts as it evolved from a fledgling business to a $120 million entity acquired by AT&T. Prior to joining USinternetwork, he spent 10 years in the Baltimore office of Ernst & Young. Miller holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration and Finance from James Madison University.

 

18. Sharon Esposito-Mayer
Chief Financial Officer, Structural Technologies

Sharon Esposito-Mayer is the Chief Financial Officer of Structural Technologies. The company develops, markets, and integrates proprietary products with specialty engineering services to improve, protect, and enhance infrastructure. It provides value-added solutions to designers, engineering professionals, contractors, and owners in the Commercial, Public, Industrial, and Energy markets.

Esposito-Mayer has 35 years of experience. She began her career in 1988. Before joining Structural Technologies, Esposito-Mayer was an EVP and CFO at GP Strategies Corporation. Before that, she served as a controller at ESG Incorporated. Earlier in her career, she worked with Westinghouse Electric Corporation as a financial analyst. Esposito-Mayer graduated from Loyola University Maryland with an MBA. She also graduated from Penn State University with an undergraduate degree in accounting.

 

19. Daniel Davila
Chief Financial Officer, Major Lindsey & Africa

Daniel Davila was named CFO of Major Lindsey & Africa in fall 2022. He first joined the company in 2017 as regional controller. Davila then served as finance business partner for their law firm-centric business lines as well as all practice groups in the APAC region. He also closely supported MLA Advisory Services, both in a behind-the-scenes and client-facing capacity. Then in 2018, Davila was promoted to director of finance, where he oversaw the Finance team and continued to provide financial management and strategic support to MLA Advisory Services and the law firm recruitment practice groups. He partnered with the practice group leaders to develop growth strategies, report on business results and explore investment opportunities. He also worked closely with clients advising them on cost modeling and pricing strategy.

Earlier in his career, Davila joined the Allegis Group in 1999 as an associate at Aerotek, where he provided operational and financial support for sales offices in the Northeast Region. From that time, he has held numerous roles within the organization, working his way up through the ranks to regional controller for Aerotek’s Central Region beginning in January 2007. In that role, Davila provided financial management for more than 100 sales teams that were producing more than $250M in annual revenue. Davila’s last role at Aerotek before moving to Major, Lindsey & Africa was as controller for Aerotek’s Government Services team, a role that he assumed in January 2012. Davila graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Finance. He was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Honors Fraternity.

 

20. Susan Krabbe
SVP & Chief Financial Officer, Columbia Association

Susan Krabbe is the Senior Vice President and CFO of Columbia Association (CA). CA is the nonprofit that manages Columbia, Maryland, the internationally acclaimed planned community founded by the late visionary developer James Rouse. Columbia is home to 105,000 residents and 1500+ businesses. CA owns and operates community facilities and other assets including 3,600 acres of open space - lakes, parks, and 97 miles of pathways. CA offers programs and activities for the entire community to embrace and celebrate its diversity.

Krabbe leads finance and accounting, budgeting and long-term financial strategy, IT, HR, procurement, and risk management for CA whose annual budget is approximately $76 million with total assets of $170 million. CA employs 700 people year-round, peaking in the summer at about 1,200.

Prior to joining CA, Krabbe served as the first controller for a private equity-backed startup providing day care for the elderly. Her previous roles at a publically traded long-term care company and the Johns Hopkins University provided diverse, broad experience in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. She began her career at PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers). She earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland and is a Certified Public Accountant. She is a community volunteer, having helped to build 10 houses through Habitat for Humanity over the years.

 

21. Timothy Lewis
Chief Financial Officer, WPM Real Estate Group

Timothy D. Lewis was appointed Chief Financial Officer of WPM Real Estate Management in October 2019. Most recently, he served as Interim CFO. Earlier, he also served as a strategic advisor to WPM. With his leadership in support of the Executive Management Team, WPM has experienced unprecedented growth geographically and as measured by the number and size of properties under management.

His professional experience includes banking, strategic business advisory services, and C-Level leadership roles with multiple regional entrepreneurial companies, specifically: Chesapeake Corporate Advisors, NeighborCare, Adaptive Trade, and The Becker Group. He also worked at Ripken Holdings, where he served as President and COO.

Lewis is a CPA with a BS from Cornell University. Additionally he holds an MBA from the University of Maryland. Away from WPM, he serves on numerous Boards, both professionally and philanthropically. He also regularly participates in competitive polo matches.

 

22. Zerihun Haile-Selassie
Chief Financial Officer, Endocrine Society

Zerihun Haile-Selassie is a highly accomplished financial executive with nearly two decades of experience leading non-profits towards long-term sustainable growth. He is recognized as a strategic leader with expertise in diversified revenue, business continuity planning, and organizational risk management. Since August 2022, Haile-Selassie has been a part of the Endocrine Society, a global community of 18,000 individuals energized by the promise of unraveling the mysteries of hormone disorders to care for patients and cure disease. The Endocrine Society is devoted to advancing hormone research, promoting excellence in the clinical practice of endocrinology, increasing understanding of the critical role hormones play in health, and advocating on behalf of the global endocrinology community.

Prior to his current CFO role at Endocrine, Haile-Selassie served as CFO at Inteleos, where he successfully executed strategies that drove innovation, financial sustainability, and international market expansion. He also served as COO and CFO at ACTFL, where he transformed the organization's information technology footprint and advanced human capital management. During this time, Haile-Selassie's breakthrough business efficiency strategy led to two-fold growth by aligning technology and finance. In addition, he worked as a member of the Finance leadership team at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), where he managed planned giving and endowment initiatives.

Haile-Selassie's exceptional financial executive expertise has been recognized by the "2018 Rising Star'' honor, which was awarded by the Non-Profit CFO industry. He earned his Master's in Accounting and Information Technology from the University of Maryland Global Campus and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE). In addition to his duties at Endocrine Society, Haile-Selassie is a member of the 2022-2024 DELP Scholar at the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

 

23. Greg Harman
Chief Financial Officer, NMR Consulting

Greg Harman is the Chief Financial Officer of NMR Consulting. He first joined the company as the CFO in 2003.

Harman is an experienced executive and brings over 35 years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, financial analysis, strategic planning, investing, tax, and tax planning. Prior to joining NMR Consulting, Harman was a Senior Manager at Ernst & Young, where he spent 7 years in the firm’s National Tax Office in Washington DC. Notably, Harman is a certified public accountant. He earned an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in accounting from Brigham Young University.

 

24. Greg Guelcher
Chief Financial Officer, Ekos

Greg Guelcher began his professional career 20 years ago. Today, he is the Chief Financial Officer of Ekos. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Ekos is the leading business management technology platform powering — and empowering — craft beverage businesses. With more than 15,000 users on six continents, Ekos helps beer, wine and cider makers drive efficiencies, power growth, streamline communication and improve visibility across their businesses. As a digital hub for all critical business information, Ekos makes it easy to manage day-to-day operations in inventory, production, sales and accounting. Ekos was named to the Inc. 5000 list in 2021 and is backed by Noro-Moseley Partners.

Guelcher first got his start in 2003 as a senior in audit at Ernst & Young. From there, he went on to Eclipsys. Later he eventually rose to SVP of finance at Unanet, his most recent position prior to joining Ekos. Guelcher graduated from Virginia Tech with a master’s degree and an undergraduate degree in accounting and information systems.

 

25. Gabe Diclerico
Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, HealthRight International

Gabe Diclerico is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of HealthRight International. Formerly known as Doctors of the World-USA, HealthRight International is a global health organization. The New York City-based company was founded in 1990 by physician and human rights advocate Dr. Jonathan Mann. The company aims to guarantee that marginalized communities have equitable access to healthcare by operating at the intersection of public health and human rights. HealthRight has worked in over 30 countries. It currently has ongoing projects in Kenya, Ukraine, Uganda, the United States, and Vietnam. Diclerico first joined the company in 2022.

Previously, Diclerico was a strategic consultant at ImpactAssets. Before that, he served as a director for the Giving Fund at Calvert Impact Capital. Earlier in his career, he also worked with Deloitte & Touche as a senior auditor. Diclerico earned an undergraduate degree in accounting, management, operations and information management from The Wharton School.
